My Black Hero #3: Star Parker

“Fighting poverty and restoring dignity through faith, freedom and responsibility.”

This is the third in a series on “My American Black Heroes.”  As I journey through this list of black leaders over the next few weeks, I will offer the following disclaimer.  As with any leader or celebrated person, we should be careful not to follow after and idolize individuals.  People are human and people fail.  My focus is on the truths and ideals that these individuals stand for and communicate well.  And, while I don’t always agree completely with these individuals, I have found their message extremely important, and their ability to share their message effectively and are great leaders and role models for people of all ages and of all races.

Note, these comments are not biographies or research papers.  They are intended to summarize why I think this person is an American hero.  I hope you will follow-up and research the individuals on your own and come to your own conclusions.

Star ParkerStar Parker is an example of a true role model.  Her story is a compelling one – a single welfare mother in Los Angeles encounters Jesus Christ.  She returns to college, receives a degree in marketing degree and starts a Christian Magazine.  Her business was destroyed by the 1992 “Rodney King” riots in Los Angeles, but she rose out of the ashes like the legendary Phoenix, re-focused on her faith and ideas to help the poor through market-based alternatives.

Parker’s story is one of a personal transformation from welfare to a national spokeswoman for reason on issues of race and poverty in the media, inner city neighborhoods, and public policy.  She has been seen on ABC’s 20/20, the Rush Limbaugh radio show, James Dobson, the 700 Club and her articles and quotes have appeard in major publications.

Star Parker has written three books:  Star has written three books, “Pimps, Whores, and Welfare Brats” (1996), “Uncle Sam’s Plantation” (2003), and “White Ghetto” (2006).  She is currently the president and founder of CURE, the Coalition on Urban Renewal & Education.  She also offers weekly op-eds to more than 400 newspapers worldwide.

I acknowledge that much of my background information on Star Parker comes from the CURE website which is here.  http://www.urbancure.org/ There you will be able to access some of Star Parker’s speeches and guest appearances on major network programs.

My favorite quote from Star Parker:  “It’s not complicated. Americans can accept Barack Obama’s invitation to move onto the plantation. Or they can choose personal responsibility and freedom.”

If you haven’t seen it, you must view Star Parker’s speech at the Family Research Council Values Voter Summit on Sept 12, 2008. She touched on almost all issues important to every Conservative – freedom of religion, evils of socialism (wealth redistribution), protection of the unborn, school choice, and traditional values.  She spoke with fervor and conviction , and invoked the Declaration of Independence as the basis of her reasoning.

Please! No Soda Tax

Proposal to raise the price of soda by 25% with massive tax

Soda Tax?I don’t know about you, but I am tired of our elected representatives sitting around thinking of new ways to tax us.   “Ultimately the government needs to raise more money to cover the deficit, and in terms of ways of raising that revenue, a tax on sugar sweetened beverages is really a no-brainer.” (from a paper by Dr. David Ludwig, co-author of a paper published in the recent issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.)  The proposal calls for a tax of 12 cents per can of soda and 67 cents to the typical two-liter bottle.  As with the recent tobacco tax, we are experiencing taxation without representation, because very few of our elected officials are listening to us.

This new push is a new plan to fund the hundreds of billions that will be required for the failing healthcare plan.  I don’t smoke, but I am against the tobacco tax.  It is clear that they are targetting the lower and middle class with these “stealth” taxes.  If you do a Google news search on “soda tax” you will find literally hundreds of news reports that clearly favor this tax.  I just saw a news story on my local television station in which numbers of individuals were interviewed that were okay with the tax, or felt it was inevitable.  This is a government “of the people, by the people, and for the people.”  Do some research on this bill. Put your opinion out on Facebook and Twitter.  Take action at FreedomWorks at this link:   http://bit.ly/tweuD

Obama Appoints New Czar

I guess they aren’t getting it …

Not calling him a Czar, but it’s another one!

The White House – Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release – 9/7/09

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, President Obama will announce that Ron Bloom will serve as the Administration’s Senior Counselor for Manufacturing Policy.

Working closely with the National Economic Council, Bloom will provide leadership on policy development and strategic planning for the President’s agenda to revitalize the manufacturing sector. He will work with departments and agencies across the administration – including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, Energy, and Labor – to integrate existing programs and develop new initiatives affecting the manufacturing sector.

Bloom will retain his role as Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury assigned to the President’s Task Force on the Automotive Industry.

President Obama is committed to a next-generation manufacturing agenda by partnering with the private sector to spur innovation, invest in the skills of American workers, and help our manufacturers prosper in the global marketplace by promoting exports.

President Obama said, “Last week we learned that our manufacturing sector expanded for the first time in 18 months and had the highest monthly output in two years. It’s a sign that we’re on the right track to economic recovery, but that we still have a long way to go. That’s why I’ve asked Ron Bloom to help coordinate my Administration’s manufacturing policy. Distinguished by his extraordinary service on the Auto Task Force and his extensive experience with both business and labor, Ron has the knowledge and experience necessary to lead the way in creating the good-paying manufacturing jobs of the future. We must do more to harness the power of American ingenuity and productivity so that we can put people back to work and unleash our full economic potential.”

Ron Bloom said, “A strong manufacturing sector is a cornerstone of American competitiveness and a critical part of President Obama’s economic strategy. As we meet the challenges of globalization and technological change, it is vital to have a concerted effort across the Administration to support an innovative, vibrant manufacturing sector.”

President Obama made the following announcement today:

Ron Bloom to Serve as Senior Counselor for Manufacturing Policy

Ron Bloom is Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury on the President’s Task Force on the Automotive Industry, a position he has held since February, 2009. Prior to joining the Treasury Department, Bloom served as a Special Assistant to the President of the United Steelworkers Union where his responsibilities included the Union’s collective bargaining program in its core jurisdictions with an emphasis on the particular issues facing the Steelworkers in its dealings with companies facing financial difficulties. He also coordinated the Union’s relationships with investors in both public and private companies. Prior to joining the Steelworkers, Bloom was one of the founding partners of Keilin and Bloom, an investment banking firm, where he was involved in numerous transactions on behalf of the Steelworkers, the Auto Workers, the Teamsters, the Air Line Pilots Association and other unions. Prior to founding Keilin and Bloom, Bloom was a Vice President at the investment banking firm of Lazard Freres & Co. where he specialized in analyzing, structuring and raising financing for union-led employee-ownership transactions. Previously he served as a research and negotiating specialist for the Service Employees International Union. Bloom is a graduate of Wesleyan University and received an MBA with distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.

Van Jones Resigns

I am reposting Darren’s post of September 6, 2009 on PatGray.com I think Darren sums it all better than I could.

Darren’s original post is at http://www.patgray.com/?p=3511

By Darren on September 6, 2009

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama’s adviser Van Jones has resigned amid controversy over past inflammatory statements, the White House said early Sunday.

Guess the pressure got to Jones.  Van Jones has been associated with some extreme fringes in society.  He was a devout communist and advocated revolution based upon Marxist ideology.  He was also involved in the Appollo Project which took part in writing Obama’s stimulus package.  Here’s more from the article.

“On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me,” Jones said in his resignation statement. “They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide.”

Ain’t “rules for radicals” a bummer, Mr. Jones?  Only, “radicals” did not put pressure on Jones.  It was simply people with ideas questioning Van Jone’s ideals.  I do guess one can have a debate about “smearing” (no critic of Jones I’m aware of “smeared” him) Jones but “lying”?  Not a chance.  The recent uphevel against Jones was based entirely upon his own words, positions, and choice of action.  Action such as signing a petition calling for an investigation into finding out if any one higher up in government, ergo, the Bush administration, allowed the 9/11 attacks to carry out just so we can plunge our nation into war.  To me, it was Jones trying to lie saying he had no idea how his name got on that petition’s list.

Jones flatly said in an earlier statement that he did not agree with the petition’s stand on the 9/11 attacks and that “it certainly does not reflect my views, now or ever.”

Yup, that would be what appears to me a flat-out lie by Jones to cover up his own failings by choice.  Anybody who believes that 9/11 was an inside jod should tread very carefully.  The ramifications of that would be huge.  I categorically denounce 9/11 truthers and advise them to do something useful like mow their lawns, pay their bills, and work hard in a profession.

Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana said in a statement, “His extremist views and coarse rhetoric have no place in this administration or the public debate.” Missouri Sen. Christopher Bonds said Congress should investigate Jones’s fitness the job.

Good for Mike Pence.  There’s much I like about him.

Fox News Channel host Glenn Beck repeatedly denounced Jones after a group the adviser co-founded, ColorofChange.org, led an advertising boycott against Beck’s show to protest his claim that Obama is a racist.

Yes, Glenn Beck’s been bold in exposing Van Jones as well as a few other crazy czars Obama has chosen to surround himself with.  Carry on Glenn, apparently you’re having an affect.

Although the article I’m linking was clearly written to depict Van Jones as someone rosy and attacked by kooks, the fact is that Van Jones has buried himself from his own choices in life.  Choices he’s not changed from.  And the best defense he could come up with about signing the 9/11 investigation petition was that he doesn’t know how he signed it?  That it never represented his views?  Totally defenseless arguments I’d say.

Critics march against Chavez across Latin America

People around the world are waking up!

” … thousands of opponents of Hugo Chavez marched against the Venezuelan president across Latin America on Friday, accusing him of everything from authoritarianism to international meddling.

The protests, coordinated through Twitter and Facebook, drew more than 5,000 people in Bogota, and thousands more in the capitals of Venezuela and Honduras. Smaller demonstrations were held in other Latin American capitals, as well as New York and Madrid.”

My Black Heroes: #2 – Tony Dungy

dungy

“It’s about the journey–mine and yours–and the lives we can touch, the legacy we can leave, and the world we can change for the better.”
— Tony Dungy

A great pastor in my life once said, “the most difficult instrument to play in an orchestra is second fiddle.”  Christians are called to play second fiddle, another way of saying we are to submit our lives, our plans, our wills to God.  My black hero for today, the second in my series, is Coach Tony Dungy.  I am awed at how Tony Dungy has, in the height of a successful career in professional sports, has decided to “turn the spotlight off of himself and on to Christ” as described by songwriter Michael W. Smith.

Anthony Kevin “Tony” Dungy is a 53 year old professional football planer and NFL coach.  Dungy was the first African-American head coach to win the Superbowl in 2007.  He announced his retirement January 2009 and has become active in many community service organizations and has been a public speaker for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Athletes in Action.

Dungy founded a mentoring program for young peole called Mentors for life and has supported Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club, Prison Crusade, foster parenting organizations and Family First.

Tony Dungy is a devout Christian and the author of several best selling books, including his memoir, “Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, and Priorities of a Winning Life.”  This is a book that I highly recommend.

Dungy’s message is one of personal responsibility and avoiding the lure of material success, focusing on family instead of fame and turning your life over to service to God, which is man’s greatest gift and purpose.

Tony Dungy is truly a sincere man of integrity.  I continue to follow his career and ministry, read his books, listen to his podcasts.  His message is clear, and, while not perfect, you can see in his life a calling by God to be a role model.  Coach Dungy is a man who lives his faith every day and has inspired millions of people of all races.

You can view Tony Dungy’s website here, where you can buy his newest book “Uncommon.”  http://www.coachdungy.com/
