Note, these comments are not biographies or research papers. They are intended to summarize why I think this person is an American hero. I hope you will follow-up and research the individuals on your own and come to your own conclusions.
Star Parker is an example of a true role model. Her story is a compelling one – a single welfare mother in Los Angeles encounters Jesus Christ. She returns to college, receives a degree in marketing degree and starts a Christian Magazine. Her business was destroyed by the 1992 “Rodney King” riots in Los Angeles, but she rose out of the ashes like the legendary Phoenix, re-focused on her faith and ideas to help the poor through market-based alternatives.

I don’t know about you, but I am tired of our elected representatives sitting around thinking of new ways to tax us. “Ultimately the government needs to raise more money to cover the deficit, and in terms of ways of raising that revenue, a tax on sugar sweetened beverages is really a no-brainer.” (from a paper by Dr. David Ludwig, co-author of a paper published in the recent issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.) The proposal calls for a tax of 12 cents per can of soda and 67 cents to the typical two-liter bottle. As with the recent tobacco tax, we are experiencing taxation without representation, because very few of our elected officials are listening to us.Filed under: Conservatism, Reactions on September 18th, 2009 | No Comments »

People around the world are waking up!
” … thousands of opponents of Hugo Chavez marched against the Venezuelan president across Latin America on Friday, accusing him of everything from authoritarianism to international meddling.
The protests, coordinated through Twitter and Facebook, drew more than 5,000 people in Bogota, and thousands more in the capitals of Venezuela and Honduras. Smaller demonstrations were held in other Latin American capitals, as well as New York and Madrid.”

“It’s about the journey–mine and yours–and the lives we can touch, the legacy we can leave, and the world we can change for the better.”
— Tony Dungy
A great pastor in my life once said, “the most difficult instrument to play in an orchestra is second fiddle.” Christians are called to play second fiddle, another way of saying we are to submit our lives, our plans, our wills to God. My black hero for today, the second in my series, is Coach Tony Dungy. I am awed at how Tony Dungy has, in the height of a successful career in professional sports, has decided to “turn the spotlight off of himself and on to Christ” as described by songwriter Michael W. Smith.
Anthony Kevin “Tony” Dungy is a 53 year old professional football planer and NFL coach. Dungy was the first African-American head coach to win the Superbowl in 2007. He announced his retirement January 2009 and has become active in many community service organizations and has been a public speaker for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Athletes in Action.
Dungy founded a mentoring program for young peole called Mentors for life and has supported Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club, Prison Crusade, foster parenting organizations and Family First.
Tony Dungy is a devout Christian and the author of several best selling books, including his memoir, “Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, and Priorities of a Winning Life.” This is a book that I highly recommend.
Dungy’s message is one of personal responsibility and avoiding the lure of material success, focusing on family instead of fame and turning your life over to service to God, which is man’s greatest gift and purpose.
Tony Dungy is truly a sincere man of integrity. I continue to follow his career and ministry, read his books, listen to his podcasts. His message is clear, and, while not perfect, you can see in his life a calling by God to be a role model. Coach Dungy is a man who lives his faith every day and has inspired millions of people of all races.
